So, honestly, I don't really mind either; if we get random encounters, cool, I'm used to that, works well enough, and if we get overworld then even if it annoys me I'll know that in the end, it's saving me some time on finding pokemon.
What I'm more upset about is no following pokemon, cmon GF, I want to cuddle my pokemon :(
