They're improvements that literally every game should have when moving to newer, more powerful hardware unless there's a deliberate stylistic reason not to. And sure, going for photorealism isn't the best idea, but there's a very long road between there and flat colors.
They might be trying to adhere to the simple 2D style, but they've forgotten or refuse to realize the reason the 2D style looked any good was from actual thought and artistic talent being put into the lighting, giving us graphics that were crisp and evocative. Instead it all got swept away in favor of slathering flat-textured models with a unidirectional cel-shade and calling it a day.
Look at this picture. I want to play a game that looks like this picture. Then I look at the screenshots of the actual game and it looks like a bad PS2 port with a washout filter over it.
