Final Fantasy 7 felt like a huge adventure around the world, and it was just a linear string of mazes glued together by a blurry world map littered with random encounters. Pokemon games are structured exactly how JRPGs were structured since DQ1 and up to DQ11. The only thing Pokemon games were missing is those bigger open areas that replaced symbolic world maps in modern JRPGs, like pic related. But that's exactly what Wild Area is - a big space that connects towns with dungeons littered in between. The only difference is scale - Pokemon games are smaller than their bigger counterparts, which was always the case anyway.
GF should not be chasing open world memes, they couldn't pull it off without years of development anyway. They should be expanding on the ideas from Gen 8.
