imo the costumes became a lot more congruous with actual modern fashion as the franchise developed, but still stayed true to its own universe
I think a lot of people feel that the costume design only got weirder as gens progressed but most Americans are pretty oblivious to actual fashion. Aggressively styled high tech sportswear has gotten a lot of attention in the past half a decade. Shorts over other pants really isn't that bizarre.
