The best middle stages tend to be either from Gen 1, or were originally fully evolved Pokemon that gained an evolution. I think the issue is that Game Freak doesn't bother putting much thought into them so they just pump out any design, and they come off more often than not as just ugly design you want to skip. Gen 4 really started that trend of shit mid evos.
