The fact that it seems to just have a single dead-eyed expression at all times and is fucking huge would definitely seem to lend credence to the idea that it's based on a mascot. I think they probably could have stood to give it some kind of pattern around the neck area evoking a zipper or something just to make it a bit more clear though.
