Gen 7 was pitiful
Here's the breakdown:

Character development is pretty much nonexistent unless you're name is "Lillie," in which case, you go from a rich bitch to a wannabe trainer. Hau has fucking backwards character development: he goes from wanting to be a trainer to not even trying anymore because we beat him so badly.
>gameplay
Not much to say here: your pokemon become extremely overleveled early and all of the trials pose little to no challenge. After you beat the elite 4 and the UBs, however, you can't even fucking level up your pokemon past 80 without pouring hours into the game
>postgame
A tree.
That you battle at.
That either is incredibly easy or the trainers already know what you're going to do and kick your ass. Even shiny hunting is anticlimactic: you pour hours into getting a perfect shiny and once you have it, you'll do... what?

Designwise, they were pretty bad. All of the starters were shit, and I do not give a fuck as to what the people in starter wars say: you're literally arguing over a fake animal. I'm not going to lie, there were a couple of good ones, such as vikavolt, but all the good designs got completely fucked statwise, and were rendered useless.
Overall review:

The game is fun to begin with. And then nothing else is fun.
