The ones we got for SM may seem like an odd bunch, but when you look at it closer, it makes sense. There's representatives for every kind of important character in the franchise: We have the protagonist, rival, gym leader, trial captain, elite four member, champion, frontier brain, evil team admin, evil team boss, bad guy who turned good, and two for the "extra side characters". I don't believe this is a coincidence.
My thought is that they will slowly build up a roster of old returning characters from now on, until they have enough to make a new PWT or similar.
The only character type to not be in the Battle Tree is Kahuna.
