I watched my friends play pokemon blue/silver for 2-3 years and then I got my own copy of Gold and played it for a year. Then Ruby/sapphire was released and it had actual colors and it was just a far better game than silver to me. Back when internet really wasnt that big and you couldnt check secrets and we had to figure out how to get the regis ourselves etc. Ruby was just so refreshing after watching and playing blue/silver/gold for so long. Also I got to play Red myself first time in gen3 thru FireRed.
Thats why gen 3 is my favorite after gen 5
