By the endgame you've probably sanded off the rough edges to create the perfect team; even then, you're not limited to only having a "meta" team. You can comfortably pick your 1-3 favorites even if they are mid and have the other half of your team cover their weaknesses and reasonably beat the game on Normal. It only gets autistic on Hardcore mode.
Radical Red (Normal, Min Grinding) is single player Pokemon gameplay at its absolute peak.
