In Gen I and II it was an active concept, as the "new" pokemon were fewer and rare, and it was quite possible to indeed CATCH THEM ALL
But when each subsequent generation introduces ANOTHER 100+ pokemon or whatever, "catching them all" quickly becomes moot and a fools errand
It's not necessarily a bad direction for the series, just a different one from when it was originally imagined. Pokemon as a series has evolved to its unprecedented success
While I personally would prefer for the series to aim towards a more Pokemon Adventures-esque feeling grounded in the first 150 of the series, I can completely understand why, from a financial point, they changed the direction of the series
