I'm one of those rare few that started getting into pokemon during the G/S/C era, and i can safely say that Johto are the worst set of starters we've ever had, both competitively and design-wise. They're so bland that even the designers set them as an example of what NOT to do in future generations. Ironically the only design that has something going for it besides IT JUST GETS BIGGER is also the most hated; that's how stale they were. At least in Gen V they were TRYING to make them unique. It was a trainwreck, but at least a fun trainwreck.
