The goal is to find the right person and move them up to husband/wife status.
You can also break it off with someone and still be close friends with them. Examples: an ex-girlfriend of mine who I'm immensely close with, and a mother who divorced her first husband because they both realize they weren't "in love", they were just good friends, so it felt wrong to be married, but they stayed friends.
I think sex CAN mean nothing if you consciously dismiss what it brings to the table, but it means a lot usually.
