One cool idea would be a special "held item for trainers" that gives your entire team a STAB boost for a particular type.
For example if you pick your trainer type to be water, every Pokemon you have that has a water attack receives the STAB bonus, even if they're not that type. So now your Nidoking's bubblebeam actually deals damage like a water types without him actually being one.
Something like that might be interesting. It could effectively work like giving your pokemon a 3rd typing without overcomplicating everything.
