Hoenn weren't "bad games" but they couldn't carry the popularity of Pokemania as well as their predecessors did, it was obvious something was missing. They were really just meant/rushed to move the GBA system, before returning a few lost features into Emerald.
Being a fan in this time period was the worst of any point, even this modern era. The "mainstream" magic had worn off and it felt like a cringe hobby you were ostracized for. The "golden age" was over by gen 3, and I still love Colo/XD but that is the truth.
