Pokemon design inspiration is wide and varied even since Gen I. Sugimori said as much during a 2003 interview. One of Pokémon greatest strengths is that anything can be conceptualized to be a Pokémon. Even so Pokémon design philosophy is about Pokémon having charm and being friendly, as Sugimori and Turner have said every Pokémon is designed to be someone's friend. Digimon are designed to be more on the edgy side on top of that both universes are constructed differently and Digimon lack the charm and familiarity that Pokémon offers. The only thing both have in common is that they involve fantastical fictional creatures, even on the monster front Pokémon rejects the monster label aside from marketing in Japan.
