I keep coming back to this moment, to when Ash is looking at Latias returning to Alto Mare, and says he should return himself. I KNOW he's talking about going back to Pallet Town, but I can't get it out of my head he's talking about going back to Alto Mare himself, after being reminded thanks to this encounter with Latias. The whole sequence through Alto Mare is entirely fan service *unless* it serves foreshadowing for where Ash is going, to remind the Audience of the possibility of going back.
