Koffing that made their home in Alola were driven to extreme places by people and other pokémon who found their noxious emissions unpleasant. As a result many took up residence in volcanos. Though the gasses inside Koffing are highly flammable some were able to stabilize and even thrive in their new environment. Design wise the skull symbol is now a flame. Koffing is red and its "pores" look like caldera.
