I'll give an example with Dunsparce. Now Dunsparce is cute, but it's also weird. The reason Dunsparce has the drill/stinger tail, and the stripes, and the wings, is that the animal its based on, the tsuchinkio or whatever, in Japanese the name is very closely related to bumble bee, so Dunsparce is effectively a pun.
The biggest problem with Dunsparce is understanding its design doesn't translate well, so it can just come off as a weird monster to foreign audiences. But when you do it gives you a newfound appreciation for the little snake, and it doesn't feel so random.
