It isn't how his design is lazy "Aerodactyl but with more spikes"
It's that they imply that this is what Aerodactyl originally was before being fossilized and what not. This is Aerodactyl as it naturally existed. There are so many things they could have done with the concept. They could've made an Aerodactyl that looks more sleek and less rocky like other species of pterosaurs. They could've made Aerodactyl have feathers to reflect how science has changed our view of prehistoric animals like it. They could've made it Dragon/Flying, Normal/Flying, or Water/Flying, a lot of possibilities depending on the direction they took the design.
Instead it's just Aerodactyl with more spikes, and Rock/Flying.
