Maybe he became a Frontier Brain although I personally don't see this option very likely, or rather i don't want it to be the case because much like Ash, Paul has an adventurer spirit so i don't want him to stay in a single place. I don't know, maybe they say he is competing in another League, maybe he is in Poke Spain? Maybe he wants to finish the Sinnoh Battle Frontier first and doesn't have the time for the PWC. Whatever the reason is, Paul HAS to be the one to train Ash not only to deal with Cynthia but to deal with the rest of his upcoming M8 matches too. Have him become his personal coach. There's no one better than Paul for the job, someone who has proven to be on Ash's level. His Ying to his Yang. Going from an edgy rival who despised Ash to being the one to work and train with him in order to push him to greater lengths. I know we wanted him to be a contestant in the PWC but a character arc like that would also work perfectly for Paul and be extremely poetic.
