My entire point is that the original legendaries weren't gods at all or even treated as such. They're just moderately more powerful beings; the only real thing that sets them apart is their rarity. GSC went from that to "I destroy that in my presence just by existing like some sort of Lovecraftian god" and "I am a god-phoenix who can bring the dead back to life".
