I think that since he's had to learn so many things on his own that he's not afraid of trying things or doing things that need to get done, even if he's not good at them. I'm sure he's had so many situations like that growing up and so he's got a kind of deep determination and tenacity. Kind of like how peppermint will grow like crazy once it takes hold, and is hard to kill.
