The "war destroys everything" is one of the central UC motives, so it's kinda unfair to say V copied Z when most Gundam sort of copy '79
I'm slightly biased though because the V2 is my favourite Gundam.
The first half of ZZ wasn't pandering to children, it was just Tomino being Tomino, with his GrimDarkDeathKillThemAll - Happy Show switching.
it just happened to be a Gundam show that time instead of something different, like Xabungle.
But imo the franchise needed a breather from being overly negative and depressing after Zeta, and the first half of ZZ did a good job with that.
The sister surviving and suddenly Newtypes everywhere at the end was stupid though.
