I think the open zone concept is a better baseline to start from but the open zones need to actually have more cohesive localized landmarking and be more generally distinct internally. I think the like, visual design of a lot of the environments is really dragging things down because the colors are so often muted so things all kind of blend together. If you look at the concept art of Paldea you can pretty clearly see there was a sort of baseline for this but the execution was the failure instead of the idea. Pokemon distribution also had too much overlap.
