I think that's the main reason why Kiki is so popular, he's just an interesting, well-written character. Design alone can't carry a pokeboy, unlike pokegirls where design is actually even more important than the character (Marnie lol). I also know some people who like Kieran as a character but dislike his design. Mostly his hair, it's just too "weird" and "crazy" for some people.
And while I personally love both Kiki and Arven a whole lot, I do agree that they probably appeal to slightly different audiences. Very happy we were able to see the two interact in the game, though.
