Yes, rivalry in a BATTLE ANIME is defined by BATTLER PROGRESS. Alain only ever gave a shit about power, Paul only ever gave a shit about power. Paul's philosophy directly contradicted and shook Ash's philosophy. Alain's belief in power was never challenged or opposed by Ash.
There was ZERO philosophical rivalry between Ash and Alain, whereas Ash and Paul had a consistent and well-defined philosophical rivalry. Your claim is that Alain also had a well-defined philosophical rivalry with Ash but Ash never knew or gave a shit about it whereas Ash and Paul were directly conflicted over their philosophical rivalry.
To add further, both Alain and Paul's philosophies revolved around battle philosophy. DP Ash settled his battle philosophy by showing Paul that talent/natural skill isn't everything and that even the weakest can become the strongest. Alain's was resolved by...Lysandre being a giant asshole and Alain not wanting to contribute to mass-genocide.
XY Ash wasn't a rival to Alain. XY Ash was an IDOL to Alain that inspired him to do better, and XY Ash didn't even know jackshit about Alain's internal struggles or philosophies.
So, yes. A battle anime's rivalry should be defined and resolved by their battle philosophy. That's the entire fucking point of the genre.
Now get lost, you utter brainlet.
