The Japanese version pulled in every big name voice actor of the day in for an episode at one point or another. 4kids couldn't keep consistent actors for the main cast.
They also have a bad habit of removing things that are great and replacing them with stuff that's worse, or nothing.
I've been rewatching the show raw and it's amazing how much got taken out. I just got to the part where the fourth ending theme starts and it's ridiculously catchy, I keep singing it to myself without noticing.
I don't despise the new stuff they made, but why throw out all the great stuff that's already there? Because it's Japanese? The whole fucking show is Japanese, you can't keep the charade up forever. Korea tried way harder than you did and they failed too.
The episodes that were removed, in addition to ruining the continuity (for the few people who care about continuity in Pokemon) were pretty much all straight up fucking bangers. I feel robbed not getting to see them as a Pokemon-obsessed kid.
Nobody, fucking nobody, would defend the 4kids dub if it was made today. The only reason people cut it slack is because they grew up with it. Well, I'm sorry, but just because you saw something as a kid doesn't make it not terrible.
4kids is the standard bad dubs are judged against. It is the yardstick of failure. There's no defending it.
