For 5th gen's animation system, each piece of the frame has to be separated, tediously, and stitches together dynamically. 3D animations are simply generated on the fly with the use of a skeleton and/or keyframes.
Now, if you're talking about the entire creation process of a 3D model and its animation vs a 2D sprite and its animation, that's a different discussion. Notice we're talking purely about animating. 3D models such as these can be reused with ease in all future projects. Simply upgrading the texture and bump mapping etc you can improve the graphics while still using the exact same animation file. Minimal work.
