I just did all of the math (averaging the exp yield of all of the mons multiplied by their encounter rate, grinding out 1,059,860 exp to get a starter to level 100, with battles taking a minimum of about 35 seconds due to all of the transitions, plus wandering around and pokemon centering) you'd have to grind for about a week, non-stop, to get to level 100. Mt Moon is linear outside of the top level, where you have to walk past a couple of ladders to the end of a single bend to progress. We all had trouble with it as kids I'm sure, but considering that Mt Moon essentially consists of a main path with two side-rooms (both of which are very small rectangles with almost nothing in them), your friend would have to be VERY special-needs to get stuck for over 100 hours.
