You make up most things yourself since all we know about the Pokémon world is that it is based on the earth and has more advanced technology than us, but at the same time it can be pretty primitive and underdeveloped like in Kanto or locations like Fortree City. It also has very different cultures instead of being focused on a single one, like how fantasy settings are most often focused on western/european setting. Just compare Ectruteak to something like Lentimas or Celestic. It can be literally anything you want it to be without clashing to hard against itself, especially since the world is composed of island nations. The varied Pokémon design also help, since there's bound to be a Pokémon for every kind of location, even outer space.
