Z-moves took up an item slot in exchange for a nuke or a tech move, in RARE cases both(soul blaze). But that was it just one big move and its over
Megas were fucked though.

Some pokemon like Sableye and Kangaskhan were really cool with how it changed them up but most just got a power boost that outdone by stronger pokemon getting the same level of power boost.
If megas were reworked to boost every pokemon to the same bst (600/650 or something) then they would be a lot nicer competitively, you could take a step further and give every pokemon that doesnt have a mega form a mega energy form until they get them. Of course some would be still be better than others but it would be far less egregious
Last thing I want to say is that conceptually megas and z moves are the best. I can imagine some people playing pokemon and thinking "What if pokemon had super forms" or "what if pokemon could do 1 big attack every fight" changing types whenever to want kinda feels like it goes against what pokemon is about and fucking wumbo mode is pants on head retarded
