Gen 4 is so weird in the grand scheme. It is simultaneously remembered fondly mechanically, as the generation that unleashed the battle system, gave us online play, and formed a cozy ecosystem between two generations once HGSS let you let play every region on an older model DS, but also as Sinnoh being samey Ruby/Sapphire 2.0 (only with an arguably less interesting region and even MORE HMs) that burned a lot of people out. While I do think Sinnoh has a lot of good points (even D/P if you can ignore its roster for a moment), but I'm not surprised the series tried new directions going forward.
