The movie has a round, toy-like aesthetic to it, which looks very clean and avoids the stylistic mismatching we sometimes saw in SWiSH, but much like XY shows you all the visual "seams" while leaving nothing to the imagination. Having said that most of the ways the movie takes advantage of actually having an entire area rendered in physical space are nice.
And of course many of us put the original Mewtwo Strikes Back into an out of context nostalgia capsule that ignores that it wasn't anything terribly special visually either.
