I also hate the art styles of both of the games you mentioned, there would be no cutemons and that alone would make me quit pretty quickly even if the dex thing was no issue. There's so many other fantasy series that do big ugly overdesigned fantasy creatures and only a few that do lots of cutesy ones mixed with the big guys.
