A running gag would be Iris in each tournament she wins she will send greetings to Ash as well as mocking his poor progress and to even things out Ash will do the same mocking that such a girl will never get a husband (Or whatever will irritate Iris the most)
As each season the rivalry would grow to bring us to this moment, the first Alola champion against the new Unova champion fighting for their pass to the Master class.

Remember that In-universe the Alola league is a tournament organized by a school teacher (Although he would easily qualify for an elite four or Champion in the rest of the world) so it is justified that Chloe and the rest of normal characters don't know Ash's level, but Goh being a nerd has no justification, unless he's just an autistic who just wants to collect things and isn't interested in the rest of the world.
