Oversized shell helmet, chunky body mass, drastic minimizing of his otter appearance, etc. Think a lot of people also preferred that it stuck to being bipedal like Oshawott and Dewott, which purpose was to go for their samurai effect and wield their shells as a bladed weapons. Looks weird and forced now that it's on all four appendages now even if it still draws it shell sword sometimes.
If Samurott just stayed with standing on two legs, think the hate would at lest lessen a good amount.
