Surprised it's not something I think about a lot, since I really enjoy the general idea of someone bringing trouble on themselves and biting off more than they can chew.
Definitely glad that we see eye-to-eye on the subject of corrupting/exaggerating a character's personality, there, and your example about Cynthia is really good, both in terms of premise and tying back to the first point about making the victim's actions "justify" what she does to them. Really like how natural the escalation for your example is as well. Although you say that her actions are a "major stretching", I'd say the progression of what she does in the scenario you propose definitely feels organic enough to not be jarring, with her cruelty/carelessness building up after shrinking the trainer, instead of immediately going "oops you lost, now get inside my sweaty shoe prison little bug man".
With a series like this that's chock full of characters, I think it's definitely fun to try and get creative with these kinds of scenarios, taking a character and figuring out an interesting way to get from point A to point B with them getting cruel (and that's not even getting into the potential that unaware cruelty can bring.)
