Rowlet and Litten were miles ahead of Popplio in popularity with Rowlet still having a clear lead and overall the base starters were considered to be an incredibly strong set, so there was a lot of starterwars from the very beginning particularly between the owl and cat - it was mostly memes though. What really kicked things off and turned it from playful fun into retarded shitposting was the starters being leaked months early - not only causing a huge war over whether or not they were real which still causes salt to this day - but setting up Decidueye as the shillmon in people's eyes because it looked like the natural next step after Greninja's success.
Months of abominable shitposting later, the game gets leaked we find out that Decidueye has shit stats (mainly speed) and that caused a huge backlash towards the fanbase after the owl line shitting on the other two for the entire pre-release season. In the middle of Incineroarfags dishing out heat, Incineroar's stats also got leaked and thanks to its speed also being terrible (before realising it would get Intimidate and be a doubles beast) they got instant karma'd and the rivalry between owlfags/catfags was fully cemented.
