More and more, I'm wondering what makes a good Pokemon design. The most common complaint this generation is, "It's a good concept, but it looks like shit." There's this gaping gap between concept and final product.
People talk shit about Exeggcute, I love these little guys like you wouldn't believe. This is not bad design, it made a mediocre concept memorable.
>All the "eggs" have different personalities
>The center egg is consistently the ace, prominently displayed in the sprites in Gen I, II, and III
>The dopey and cracked egg in the back, the dopey egg becomes one of the Exeggutor heads
>The other three eggs exist to emphasize the ace
In effect, the design answers the question: "How can me make a bunch of fucking eggs memorable?" It does this by emphasizing the "bunch" - by giving each egg a personality which has been consistent across artwork and sprites up until BW/XY when dynamic sprites and 3D models led to the loss of Pokemon's personalities. The design evokes the phrase "a bunch of bad eggs" and an archetypal five-man band, concepts which would resonate well with the young audience of Pokemon who had friends.
It's the complete opposite of SwSh's and SM's designs, which start with interesting concepts (a rock monster using the concept of coal and locomotion) that materialize into fucking shit designs (Golem/Rhydon but with a bunch of coal poured on him) comprising soft, undefined shapes and saturated-to-fuck colors. Is this just how it is now?
People talk shit about Pokemon designs constantly without any argument. I'm just wondering if there's a conversation to be had.
