So I've beaten Morty and while I was making my way to Ecruteak, I was just taken away at how much there is to do in Johto. I had to take care of the mailman's Farfetch'd and used her in the Bug Catching Contest which got her up to Lv. 17 and got me 3rd place with a Scyther. Obviously I kept her around and just gave the mail to one of my PC pokemon to give away.
Then there's the whole Sudowoodo quest and exploring the National Park getting alot of items like Dig for my Quilava. Both the Togepi egg and the Odd Egg hatched (Shiny Elekid). And given how Johto is designed to get anywhere in a short amount of time, I backtracked to New Bark to show Elm the Togepi and collect the money I had saved. I went back to Goldenrod PCC to trade off some prevolves I already had data for their evolutions on eg. Traded away Pidgey because I already have Pidgeotto. The Staryu in pic related is just one of the pokemon earned via wonder trade though I plan on using Kingdra as my water type. Then I finally set off to Ecruteak.
The mod also includes a shrine in Ecruteak where you speak to a medium who gives you the choice to "bless" your Pokemon (basically the same as giving them a massage or haircut) or to battle her. I also got the EXP share from Oak's aide for catching 30 pokemon (I currently have 51 pokemon in the dex) and am using it on Togepi just to fill up some pages in my Pokedex.
I do wish that future Pokemon games try to implement more optional little side-quests that add to your experience and the immersiveness of the world like gen2-5 did. It's ultra comfy.
