Gary is usually ahead of Ash, and Ash has beaten Kukui and Champion Iris. Also, Lance wasn't called a champion before his match with Leon, so he could have been dethroned by Gary. Hopefully, Ash will have a spar with Gary and lose so that they can be rivals again.
