The main conceit of the Zodiac camp is that GF is doing this all intentionally as part of the design process but then that begs the question they jump through hoops to avoid:
If they're doing it intentionally, why would there be outliers?
We know from the beta of Gold/Silver that the original starter was going to be a bear but something happened behind the scenes leading to it being unceremoniously dummied out and swapped with a hastily redesigned ground-type echidna and a line for it basically pulled out of someone's ass in a few days given a complete lack of coherence in the evolutions, the hasty reuse of the Charizard line's stats and Typhlosion, a fire type, being named after fucking Typhoons.
And then there comes the matter of the Delphox line. A line entirely steeped in the mythos of foxes using that as a vector to introduce a magic theme into the line, with Braixen being an obvious shout-out to magical girl designs and and Delphox being somewhere between a western wizard and a shrine maiden. If it was meant to represent the dog,
why would the designers not just make it a dog? The previous example can be somewhat forgiven given Gen 2 being held together by duct tape, hope and whatever magic Iwata pulled out of his ass but this is Gen VI where trends had supposedly codified. There'd be none of the hoops and leaps people on here keep making to try to justify backing the horse they did now that Fuecoco's given it a solid bullet in the leg.
Tl;Dr Zodiac theory breaks the moment you realize the designers wouldn't have to justify or subvert shit; they could just MAKE IT.
