With SwSh theme and way how it was advertised (G-Weezing reveal was basically all about how its ability is supposedly great in VGC) it was quite obvious that TPC had plans to push harder into competitive scene but thanks to Corona it's just bad business for them - VGC scene made money mainly through merch sold on live events and those are difficult or at moments impossible to organize right now. Competitive became overnight waste of money for TPC and this is why they decided to stray hard from it.
I have no idea what are plans for Gen 9 but I would not be surprised if this trend will continue. Corona seems to not be magically becoming less of a threat and again - TPC will not focus on something that can potentially end with loses.
Future of Pokemon is in single player and exclusively casual pvp.
