This layered world design made returning to old routes not a disappointing detour for a potion, but new content to explore on the way to the next destination, as well as connecting destinations you've already visited so as to make travel more convenient in the future.
Starting with BW, you didn't have alternative routes to your destination like that. It was just "go forward" or "fly back to a previous location".
