XY came out exactly during the period when Watamote was airing, an anime whose protagonist is an autistic basement dwelling girl with messy hair and baggy eyes. I don't need to say that /a/utists, neckbeards and ironic weebs all flocked to her like moths to the flame.
And surprise, there was a character from XY who looked exactly like her. A character from the most famous franchise in the world, who is a waifu, and just happens to look like an other extremely popular character. Over time the hex maniac's popularity probably exceeded that of Watamote.
