If you only see the switch as an handheld, why would you pay 100 more for just 2 hours of battery on the least demanding game, when the lite already has 7 hours of battery life?
The new 3DS had 6 hours but no one said that it failed as a handheld for that
(The left battery life stat doesn't account for the revision switch, which can be used for 9 hours maximum)

Not exactly, the lite uses new internal components to improve battery life so it's better than the old regular switches in this department
BUT the latest regular switches (probably what OP meant by upgraded switch) will also use them these new components as well
So at the end, in term of battery life
Switch + new components > Switch Lite > OG Switch

It's exactly the same deal with this as with the 2DS - a kid-friendly, feature-nerfed version of the full-fat unit to sell to parents as it's easier to stomach 200 for a handheld for little Timmy, than it is 300 for a home console for Timmy just yet.
