Pokemon succeeded because it was generally designed to sell, Charizard happened to be cool, sure but it's just a recolored Toriyama dragon. What made Pokemon sell so well is that it was designed to sell. Word of mouth from friends, being able to trade and kids either buying 2 gameboys + a link cable or convincing family or friends to get one skyrocketed. Going by designs now, Pokemon is a success because they're not simplistic, but memey and cute. Sobble, Sirfetch'd & so on. There's also a large amount of simple Digimon designs, especially in it's early years when it was still competiting with Pokemon.
One last thing; I recommend not making threads like this; People come here to talk about Pokemon, not fuel their superiority complexes about other franchises.
