It just falls flat in execution. A number of the usual problems Game Freak has, seemingly worse since they still hadn't significantly improved their ability to make 3D games with this being their third main-line attempt. Then, the base games were also rushed out to hone in on Pokemon's anniversary, with a number of cut things being seen in the game's data, only to be implemented entirely in USUM.
They weren't like the other traditional third entries, or an entirely new experience like BW2, rather it felt like it was just the 40% or so of the game they never finished put back in.
It'd definitely not the worst generation, and even taking SWSH out of the equation, I'd argue that it may surpass Gen 6. I had more fun with Gen 6, especially with some of the experiment GF did with it, but Gen 7 has a more complete package and a steadier story (although, blame TPCI for that) and I feel like it actually ties it's regions entire theme into the game, which is appreciated as it makes the world feel a tad more real.
Honestly, despite having less fun with them than Gen 6, it gave me hope that because this game was 'good enough' and I believed GF were slowly getting better at 3D games, it would be a good stepping stone for Gen 8 on the new console, being a far better game, but boy was I wrong. These games gave me false hope, but that's not their fault.
