I really want to push your ability to interact with the world with your pokemon back. I know people hate HMs. But ever since they got rid of them pokemon lost that sense of adventure it once had. It's no longer "you and your pokemon." It's "You and your government sanctioned transport" I really liked how you could ride certain pokemon in LGPE and I'd love to see that come back. Maybe just make it so that there are just a select amount of rideable pokemon that you can use instead of the pokemon the game gives you. Don't tie it to an HM just let them do it.

>Digging pokemon to tunnel you out of caves or just travel underground and maybe find hidden items/paths
And of course things like rock smash or cut can just play an animation and break the thing like they do in PLA. This is all obviously a pipe dream and would probably be too taxing to implement but it would definitely hook me.
